Sewing machine furniture, cabinets or tables are available for the seamstress to have a designated desk or work station for her sewing. Gone are the days of setting your machine up on the dining room table or a spare office desk in the den. It is nice to have your own cozy craft corner or room with furniture intended to hold a sewing machine and other supplies. Whether you use a machine for embroidery, quilting, simple hemming or you have an industrial serger, you will find that you make the best use of your space by having furniture and chairs at the right height for sewing.

Depending on the features you desire, just about any sewing furniture will work with any type of sewing machine. The one exception to this rule is if you want an air lift platform or the means to lower and raise your machine through a small trap in the furniture surface. If you always like your machine out and ready-to-use this is an unnecessary attribute. For the person who is using a room for more than one purpose and sometimes wants the machine out of sight, or who wants an extra work surface unencumbered by a sewing machine, the air lift component is a great feature for sewing room furniture. Certain models will have maximum dimensions that your machine fit through the hole in the cabinet top. Some cabinet models will have exchangeable plates that can be purchased to fit your particular machine. Your machine locks in place so that it can be safely lowered within the storage area. Be sure to inquire with the retailer for mounting plate that fit your model.

Furniture made for sewing will have traits that you cannot find in desks or tables made for other purposes. One great feature is the extension table. This can be a dropleaf or an extension of the table that is supported with foldable legs. This allows even more area for marking fabric, cutting smaller pieces, piecing, and pinning. If you need a larger cutting area you may want to consider buying a sewing cutting table. If the extendable area is behind the machine it can keep the clothing or quilt lying flat as one sews. This keeps one from fighting the pull of gravity on heavy or large fabric items so that it is easier to keep the cloth positioned and sew steady in the machine properly. It also keeps less of one's quilt or precious formal clothing off the floor.

Another feature to look for in sewing machine furniture is a cabinet door with pockets or niches the perfect size to hold spools of thread for compact and organized storage. Many cabinets will also have drawers. Drawers that are not exceptionally deep are better at keeping sewing accessories organized since thread, needles, bobbins and most notions and tools lay relatively flat. At least one deep drawer is nice for storing one's clothing patterns. The large collector of patterns may prefer an office file cabinet for their patterns. Sometimes there will be open shelves for convenient placeing of items that are used frequently and need to be kept in sight. Having one's sewing machine on a piece of furniture with wheels is a handy format if one needs to be free to occasionally move the machine from place to place. If you love to sew or are stilling learning to sew there is nothing better than having a proper set-up to work with. You need your work space to be functional, organized and pleasing to the eye.
