Sewing Machine Extension Table

There are two possible types of products you may be looking for if you want a sewing machine extension table. The one is the furniture type of table you set your sewing machine on and use for a sewing desk or station. The extension is a way to enlarge your sewing area temporarily. Sometimes the extension can be large enough to use for a cutting table. It may be a great place to piece and pin different parts of clothing or quilt squares together. Sometimes it is just great for holding large pieces of fabric in the correct position in the machine and keeping its drape off the floor while sewing. When the extension is in use it is supported by legs or a folding brace. An attractive feature of this variety of sewing room furniture is that the extension can often be folded down when not in use. These large work areas can take up a lot of floor space in one's home, so it is nice to reduce its intrusion within a room when not actually sewing. These products are also suitable for other craft machines like a serger, for instance.

Another type of sewing machine extension table is a platform of perhaps 18 inches square or larger that can be placed around the arm of a free arm or embroidery sewing machine. This gives a seamstress a flatbed sewing experience like one would get with a sewing machine cabinet that allows the sewing machine's work surface to sit flush with the surface of the cabinet. The advantage to flatbed sewing is that when handling large amounts of cloth for sewing a quilt, heavy curtains or a long formal dress it is easier to position the cloth over a large flat area. It is also handy for sewing the seams of larger sections of conventional clothing. The fabric seems a little less inclined to run away from one's hands when you do not have gravity dragging it away from the machine by its drape.
